Inside Look: Artist, Dwight N. Smith
Posted: 8/11/2009

Dwight N. Smith creates rhythmic sculptures using a variety of woods and 2-dimensional mixed media pieces that are filled with symbolism.

I was surprised to learn that Mr. Smith grew up next to Charles McGee this year’s winner of The Kresge Foundations Eminent Artist Award. Expressive colors and inventive use of materials is a similarity between the two artists.

Mr. Smith translates everyday stories into visual imagery. “I don’t really do abstract art,” says Dwight, “I’m always telling a story or trying to tell a story.” Mr. Smith’s African mahogany and burl wood sculptures are amazing. He uses solid wood construction with no inlay; each piece of wood goes straight though with no ornate carving. A finishing coat of clear lacquer gives a soft sheen. The appreciation for wood grain, smooth surfaces and round forms of his sculptures remind me of Elizabeth Catlett.

Dwight N. Smith’s show at the Liberal Arts Gallery runs through August 29, 2009.
