Hair Liberation
Posted: 8/31/2009

When Detroit native Chris-Tia Donaldson finally decided to release her relaxer and go natural, she felt liberated and free.  Now, she has recently published a book, Thank God I’m Natural. “The purpose of this book is to help dispel some of the most common myths and misconceptions about kinky hair,” she says.

Donaldson decided to go natural in 2002. “I grew tired and frustrated of spending so much time and money on my hair. It would go through a vicious cycle where it would grow and break off,she explains.  Comfortable with deciding to go natural, she wasn’t sure in regards to the response of her colleagues. “After graduation from Harvard Law School in 2003, I wore a wig for over two years at my first job primarily to hide the fact that my hair was (natural).” After working through this process Donaldson realized that she needed to abandon the mainstream notions of what it means to be beautiful.

“When I came to the realization that I could go natural, I wanted to share all the information I learned about caring for my hair. I also wanted to let all the ladies know that going natural would not put an end to their career, prevent them from getting a date, or require them to join the ‘movement’.”

Donaldson now lives in Chicago and conducts commercial licensing transactions. She is a proud native of Detroit and is thanking God she is natural.
