FLIPSIDE: Media
Posted: 3/19/2008

It’s been over a week since the Mayor’s State of the city address, so just out of pure curiosity, I took a look at clickondetroit.com to see if people were still commenting. Of course they were.

People are still commenting. People are still demanding that Kilpatrick step down. People are still suggesting there was a party at the Manoogian, a party where the guest list must be lost somewhere in Iraq with those weapons of mass destruction that we’ve been searching to find for over seven years. People are still talking about text messages that only the Free Press has access to and have been spoon feeding us two at a time to keep their subscription levels up.

There was one comment that caught my attention though and partially because it was something I was contemplating as well. The comment asked, “I wonder how many of you would be blasting the Mayor if the news media decided to ignore this story?” I wonder. The media has a great way of motivating emotions, its how it sells. I believe that a lot of people are driven by the media’s pull instead of working with the reality of the situation.

The reality is that the people of Detroit knew about the alleged party back in 2003. People of Detroit knew that police officers lost their jobs and insisted it was because of their investigation of the party as well as the death of an exotic dancer who was supposedly at the party. People of Detroit knew that last year the Mayor settled with those officers and cost the city millions in doing so. We had a pretty good idea that Kilpatrick was lying about having an affair with Beatty, but then we left that between he and his wife.

Between time, the city has hosted a successful Super Bowl at Ford Field. We have hosted a successful MLB All-Star game at Tiger Stadium. The downtown area has been revitalized with new businesses and renovations of existing buildings. New houses are being built throughout the city as well as downtown. The city seems to be making progress, then the Free Press wants to publish some text messages from 2003. All of the sudden we are back to square one.

All of the sudden people are more angry about an issue that we as Detroiters had put behind us in an effort to keep the city moving forward. All of the sudden people who visited Detroit for the first time during the Super Bowl and praised Detroit for making such advances are vowing to never come here again. All of the sudden Detroiters have turned on themselves and yes, I do believe the media plays a part in that.

After reflecting on that comment I’d read on clickondetroit.com, I’d have to say not many. Not many people would be blasting the mayor if it were not for the media coverage, because they were not blasting him before when all the same accusations were present. And, just in case you don’t believe how persuasive the news media is, just do a little research on Orson Wells and see what happened when he broadcast an episode of War of the Worlds over the radio.
