MOCAD Celebrates Hip-Hop Exhibit While Partying with a Purpose
Posted: 3/25/2008
On Saturday March 29th, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit will come alive with the sounds of driving bass lines, beautiful people and the ongoing exhibitions Holy Hip Hop! New Paintings by Alex Melamid and ReFusing Fashion: Rei Kawakubo. "Gold" presented by the newest young professional group in Detroit, Nuwave is the junior arts appreciation and fundraising arm of MOCAD. Chaired by staunch supporter of the arts and co-owner of Slow's Bar BQ Detroit, Philip Cooley, "Gold" promises not to be your mothers fundraiser.
“In celebration of the 'Holy Hip-Hop' event, we wanted to create a fundraiser that was different from anything else out there and I truly believe that we are doing that," said Cooley. The party with a purpose revolves around the artists represented in the current exhibition, pop culture and fashion. Most importantly this event is helping to define MOCAD and it's young group of supporters, Nuwave.
According to Cooley, "We want people to come out and have a great time, discover the museum, all that it has to offer and what a great city for the arts Detroit is." To help make this event accessible to all who love the arts, event tickets are among some of the most competitively priced at $75.00 for VIP, which includes a reception, food from some of the area's most innovative restaurants including; Moo Moo's Organic Bistro, Mercury Coffee Bar, Slow's Bar BQ, and Motor City Brewery Works. Some of the best locally brewed beer and developed wines will be presented too. For those who just want to come out and celebrate contemporary arts and listen to some great music for the night, tickets are only $15.00. Suggested attire for the evening is fashion forward, dressing like only true Metro Detroiter's can.
Since MOCAD's opening in October 2006 with the Kluass Kertress curated exhibit, "Meditations in an Emergency" the museum has been home to some of the most provocative and thought provoking, music, film and photography exhibits the area has seen in some time. MOCAD has also become a haven in assisting local artists in honing their crafts and introducing children to the world of fine arts through various workshops.
According to Cooley, "Detroit's art community is wonderfully eclectic and diverse and MOCAD's place is not to compete with the Detroit Institute of Arts, but to add to the creative landscape. By expanding our arts community and bringing in new gallery's and museum's it assists in creating the culture component of our urban center that is Detroit. Ultimately by offering people a look into all aspects of the arts in one area, it will draw more people down and increase patronage and support of all the wonderful museums and gallery's the city has to offer."
In support of this mission to fill the gap in Detroit art's and continue supporting the work MOCAD is doing, 100% of the proceeds generated from the "Gold" event will be reinvested in the museum.
