Let's talk trash:Earth Day in Detroit
Posted: 4/21/2008
Once a year going green is brought to the forefront of people's conscious as the world celebrates Earth Day. While some think that the celebration of keeping the world clean is something that the average citizen isn't interested in; there are many people who would disagree. Over the next several weeks, various non-profit organizations will be holding events and lecture series aimed at getting people involved in making the earth and Detroit a better place to live. Groups such as the Detroit Synergy, Recycle Detroit, and even the Michigan Opera Theater are showing people how to become better citizens of the earth.
Detroit Synergy, the grass roots non-profit organization who partnered with the city of Detroit, during the Motor City Makeover campaign four years ago, is back with over 30 projects throughout metro Detroit. DSG has collected over 40 tons of garbage, recycled over one ton of trash, and helped clean up over 20 acres of land. While you don't need a knack for gardening you do need a desire to make a difference and willingness to put in a few hours of hard work. The reward? "Seeing the beauty that you're hard work helped to uncover" said Jen Rudd, project developer and Steering Committee Member. The Michigan Opera Theater is getting in the act of going green with the ninth annual Bravo Bravo! Bravo! Bravo, which is known for it's trifecta of great food, even better drinks and hot music is making the move toward going green. This year the event is utilizing 100 percent biodegradable forks, knives, spoons, plates, cups and napkins provided by Michigan Green Safe Products. BB!, is also cutting down on the 80 yards of waste it created by recycling all plastic and glass refuge. "We feel that it's important to start making a difference in the environment in small ways so this is just the first in what we hope will be many steps to make BB!, a 100 percent green event" said recycling chair Amanda Muesilli. Tickets for BB! are $65.00 in advance and $85.00 at the door. For more information on attending Bravo Bravo!, visit their website at .www.bravobravo.org
Recycle Detroit, founded by Wayne State Student, Sarah Kubick, helps Metro Detroit go green every day by hosting recycling sites every Wednesday from 10 a.m to 2 p.m and Saturday from 9a.m to 3 p.m at 1331 Holden Street and Trumbell. There, residents can reduce their contribution to Detroit's landfills and incinerators by dropping off paper, cardboard, glass, metals and more.
