Innovation and vibrant use of bold colors are the themes of the upcoming exhibition at the River’s Edge Gallery in downtown Wyandotte. The show will feature the work of metro Detroit’s own Lee Vanderwalker and Ted Johnson who share the commonality of creating works that are innovative in technique and rich with intense colors. Modern artists like Ted Johnson are continually evolving their style and experimenting with the new mediums that modern technology affords.

The second floor will be the home of the eight week exhibition which will feature a wide variety of artworks from Johnson and Vanderwalker. Lee Vanderwalker uses bright colors differently than Johnson in her quest to reflect the atmosphere of the Caribbean in her beautiful Caye Caulker, Belize studio. The use of bold blues, reds, greens and yellows illustrates “the emotional statements about her love for Belize, cultural diversity, the pristine beauty of the reef and the ethos of Caribbean life.

Meet the Artist night is on Friday August 15, The exhibition will run July 9th through September 13th. The gallery hour are 10-7 Monday through Thursday, 10-8 on Friday and 10-5 on Saturday.

Johnson, who paints almost entirely as a digital painter, demonstrates a new method of creating art labeled, “original inkjet paintings.” Johnson feels that the “the possibilities with digital are far greater than with traditional brush, paint, and canvas.” Johnson, who has been using this medium for the past ten years, found great success as a wood worker and wood sculptor previous to his adaptation of this method which will also be featured in the exhibition. The new medium has afforded the use of boldly darkened reds, oranges, yellows and blues that encompass the images of women, men and children, creating a pristine image that is unlike anything seen on a canvas.
