I'm Just Saying...What's Up With Our Local Fashion Community?
Posted: 8/21/2008

I’m a little confused this morning…

I read the article, “A T-Shirt to Save Garment Center” in Women’s Wear Daily this morning and don’t know how to feel.  The article starts out by highlighting that the chicest thing to wear during NY Fashion Week this season will be a black t-shirt with the words, “Save the Garment Center.”

Anna Sui, designer and Michigan native came up with the grassroots campaign to raise the awareness of the shrinking manufacturing and production facilities in the Garment Center in NY and asks the question, ‘where are we (designers) going to go’?  She calls for the city of NY to set aside a building to preserve the industry.  She has garnered the support of other designers, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, City Hall and design schools asking them, will the students need to go to China after graduation?

I am forced to ask the fashion community a few things:

1.)     How did we loose out on the Anna Suis, Tracey Reeses and Varvatos’ of the world?  It seems that the big name designers leave and don’t look back.  Why??  Is it the lack of local support?  The lack of vision and foresight?  The lack of diversity?

2.)     After several years of telling the same story, why hasn’t the local fashion industry united?  Who’s to blame??

I need to know...
