Inside Look with Stephanie K: Singer, Songwriter from Bloomfield Hills
Posted: 3/24/2010

She writes all her own songs, lyrics and melodies. 23 year old Stephanie  mixes pop, rock with splashes of funk and soul on her debut album, Good Intentions. Not only is Stephanie a powerful singer, but she is a true fashionista. Its time to meet this talented artist.....

When did you start singing?

I started off doing musicals at a very young age.  I have always loved the limelight and have never been afraid to get on stage in front of a big crowd, sing my lungs out and strut my stuff

Who are your musical inspirations?

As someone who writes all of her own music, I really appreciate singers who are also songwriters.  I have always found that singing my own songs garners so much emotion, because, obviously, I am singing about something that I have experienced or something that has a lot of meaning to me.  With that in mind, my musical inspirations include Ray Charles (my favorite songwriter), Mariah Carey (vocals that can't be rivaled), Lady GaGa (uniqueness and a killer pen), Billie Joe Armstrong (of Green Day...one of my favorite bands...he is so creative, deep, and emotional...and he is never afraid to speak his mind, no matter how controversial the subject). Of course I also worship the queen of pop, Madonna; over 30 years in the game and she continues to reinvent herself, drop jaws and put out catchy music.

What is your favorite song on your debut album?

That's a tough question. I really love the debut single, "Story Of A Broken Heart".  So many love/heart break songs portray the female as the victim, and I know from experience that this is not always the case.  The song's theme revolves around just that...the male getting his heartbroken.  I also really love the outrageousness of "Famewhore", which playfully touches on all of the ridiculous/insane things people do to become/stay famous in this crazy industry.  "Disaster" is another favorite of mine. In it, I catalog all of my faults/flaws and warn every man who is interested, "looks are deceiving, I’m not worth pursuing."  I'm very honest in my songwriting. I write what I know and what I've seen.

What is one must have item for the spring?

I'm loving the peep toed floral pumps that I've been seeing.  As someone who likes to play with both hard and feminine aspects in my look/wardrobe, I think it adds a flirty but cutesy touch to any outfit (especially with a 5 inch heel).

How would you describe your personal style?

As I stated above, I like to mix feminine aspects with harder pieces.  I have been told I'm very "sassy."  There's something intriguing about a girl in a mix of edgy and lighter pieces...you can't quite place her as a "good girl" or a "bad girl"...which is very much me.  I ride the border....after all, I am a Gemini (split personalities are our specialty)!

What are 5 things you cannot live without?

My phones.  I like to be in constant communication with my family, friends, colleagues, current events and sports scores.  And I'm a twitter-holic! Sunglasses.  No matter what you did the night before or where you are coming from, they always make you look sleek and polished. Songwriting journal.  I write every day without fail. I like to put my thoughts and emotions down as they are fresh in my mind. Running shoes. I am an avid runner. I love putting on a good playlist and jogging...it is such a great release and I feel so strong and refreshed afterwards. Energy Drinks. I am a morning person AND a night owl.  I get very little sleep.  It is rare that I get more than four hours per night. Unhealthy, I know...but nobody's perfect!

Where is your favorite hangout spot?

My favorite hang out is actually in the studio!  I love recording, being goofy and coming up with new and innovative ideas.  However, in terms of going out, I love Big Rock in Birmingham.

Any advice for young women wanting to pursue a musical career?

If you are passionate about it, go for it.  You will receive opposition.  You will be criticized.  You will be rejected.  Put your heart and soul into it.  Live it, breathe it.  Practice everyday (it truly does make perfect).  If you really want it...believe in yourself...and believe in fate.  Be your own biggest fan and never let failure be an option.
