Owners, Claire Nelson and Francis Gunrow, have dubbed the Bureau of Urban Living a "modern day general store for city dwellers" which describes the store perfectly. It’s more than just a gift shop or specialty store. There are practical items available here that are not readily available in the city. Atmosphere:
Located on the ground floor of the historic Canfield lofts in Detroit’s Midtown, the Bureau of Urban Living has the look of an urban loft mixed with the friendliness and comfort of a local general store. The space is small but designed very well so that many items can be displayed without it being cluttered. Everything is clean and organized which makes for a great atmosphere to browse.

Selection and Affordability:
Clare describes the selection at the store as "a little bit of a lot of things." At the Bureau of Urban Living one can find practical affordable items for the kitchen, bath, office, bedroom, and just life in general. There is a small section with books about Detroit as well as other cities along with a clever selection of greeting cards. The store carries the Mrs. Meyers line of cleaning products that are biodegradable and good for the environment. Some of the basic items available for purchase are towels, barware, shower curtains, watering cans, and candles just to name a few. A lot of the things are $20 or under. Some of the more expensive items are the larger or more unique things created by local artists that you won’t find at other stores.

Hipness Factor:
The Bureau of Urban Living is a very cool store that is worth stopping into. The displays are very clean and all the items from the basic to the ornate could fit perfectly into any living space. From take out menu organizers to stem less wine glasses the items available are hip and functional. They have a great philosophy and are very passionate about retail business in Detroit. During their First Thursday’s events where the store has extended shopping hours, The Bureau of Urban Living donates a percent of sales from that day back to the public realm of Detroit. They are trying to set an example and encourage others to fill the need for more local owned and supported spaces. Francis and Claire saw a need, came up with the idea, and have made it a reality which is a great example to set.
