High Fashion Takes on the Eastern Market
Since 1891, Detroit’s historic Eastern Market has been home to farmers, merchants and food lovers. Each Saturday the market hosts more than 150 farmers and vendors from Michigan, Ohio, and Canada that offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and flowers. More than 26,000 Detroit residents, suburbanites and tourists shop at the market on any given Saturday (open 6 am to 4 pm).

Witnessing the vast changes in the city over the past four decades, Tommy Bedway always has a pulse on the tastes of Detroiters. At age 10, Ronnie Bedway began his lifelong career in the meat business working the counter at his father’s meat shop at the Gratiot Central Market. After working in chain markets as a young adult, Ronnie opened his own business at Eastern Market in October 1967. As a third generation meat expert, Tommy Bedway now oversees the shop in which he grew up. Through the countless hours spent at the shop during his childhood, Tommy grew fond of the business and acclimated himself with the market and its customers.

Faithful weekend visitors to the market, the husband and wife design team, Eugenia Paul, chose the Eastern Market as the backdrop to display their latest fashions because they feel "it’s a great place to shop." The crowd of shoppers and vendors were very pleasant during the shoot. Inspirations for their new fall line were taken from the 70’s and Tamara Dobson, the model and actress best known for her leading role as Cleopatra Jones.
With form fitting dresses and high waisted skirts, their collection is classy and sexy. Eugenia Paul’s fall pieces feature bright colors such as red and purple, as well as boast one of the season’s hottest colors-gray. When asked about "must haves" for the fall they suggested something "bright or metallic". Whether it’s for a date, cocktail party, or just strolling though the Eastern Market, Eugenia Paul’s new fall line has something to fit every lady’s taste. Look for their fall line to be available on the upcoming DFP boutique. Just as Eugenia Paul’s aesthetic constantly evolves with changing fashion trends, Ronnie’s Meats must adapt to changing consumer needs. Although Michigan’s ailing economy keeps many families at home for dinner instead of at restaurants, an increasing number of single family and duel working parent households depend on conveniently prepared meals. As many metro Detroiters look to suburban fruit and deli markets for healthy yet convenient options, they may overlook Eastern Market’s competitive prices and wide selection. At Ronnie’s meats, you will find not only 100 feet of counter space showcasing the area’s finest selection of fresh meats, but also more than 100 years of combined knowledge and dedication to service. The Bedway family and their employees specialize in catering to their customers’ needs, whether that entails seeking out a rare cut, offering tips on preparation, or recommending a dish for a special occasion. According to Tommy, "the days of the butcher/customer relationship have eroded in supermarkets."

For Tommy Bedway, loyal customers motivate him to continue his family business in the heart of the city. He explains, "the people of Detroit are good people as a whole and that’s why I come down here every day and I enjoy being in the city itself… I’ll always be optimistic." According to Tommy, the most rewarding aspect of owning a family business in Detroit is building loyal customer relationships and watching generations of families grow. Through a combination of hard work, adaptation, and true love for the city, Ronnie’s Meats has served generations of metro Detroiters and exemplifies the excellence of Eastern Market.

In the near future, look for the Eastern Market to undergo some major changes as part of a redevelopment strategy, including updated sheds, improvements to streetscapes and public spaces, and educational and community outreach. By supporting existing businesses while attracting new ones, Eastern Market continues to serve as Southeast Michigan’s premier food center.
