Ten Tips for Buying Vintage Clothes
1. Start small. Look for an accessory that fits your style and go from there. 2. Keep it personal. Buy pieces that reflect your personal style that you can see yourself wearing over and over again. 3. Don’t be afraid to haggle. Know that the dealer typically wants something near the price on the ticket so don't start too low and be willing to meet the dealer in the middle. 4. Buy in bulk. If you present more than a single item when proposing a deal you will typically get a better rate. 5. Try the clothes on. The way clothing sizes run has changed through the decades. Make sure they fit so it doesn’t collect dust in your closet. 6. Check for flaws. Inspect the condition of the clothes for any stains, tears, or flaws. It is ok to use flaws in an item as a negotiating tool. However, the deal more than likely has considered the condition when pricing the item, but it never hurts to ask. 7. Do your research. If you are looking for a specific designer or item it may help to know the going rate to avoid being ripped off. 8. Talk to the seller. The more you get to know the seller and vice versa the more likely you are to hear about sales, new items, and things you are looking for. 9. Take your time. Look through the racks, baskets, and bins of items that are for sale. If you take the time you may come across a hidden gem of a piece that isn’t in plain sight. 10. Keep an open mind and be adventurous. Try something on that you normally wouldn’t be drawn to. It may end up looking great and fitting you perfectly.
