Detroit City Airport: Inspirations from the 'Runway'
Posted: 3/4/2008

Every season, fashion groupies alike study the latest trends from the runways of Paris, Milan and New York – but what about the runway in our very own backyard? As peculiar as this may sound, DFP has vamped the airport into their own personal fashion palette for its exclusive designers. With winter towards a dead end, designers are ready to brighten and uplift the runway with their spring line.

Black Silk Bubble Skirt $190, Beulah Cooley
Glazed Cotton Trench Coat $175, Eugenia Paul

Multi-print rayon blend knit sleeper with matching sleep mask $75, EthelMae

Early before the Spyker/Marquis Jet Event in mid January, the creative team behind Detroit Fashion Pages showcased some of Detroit’s hottest designs in this airport-turned-photo studio. With that in mind, we’ve decided to spotlight five local designers, each representing a strong collection and original style. These five talented artists have various years of experience and expertise in their field.

Black polished cotton blouse $120.00, Eugenia Paul
Magenta linen blend skirt $125.00, Eugenia Paul

Glazed Cotton Trench Coat $175.00, Eugenia Paul
Yellow and Grey Dress $350, Eugenia Paul

Some of these designers see fashion as art, while others see the art in their creations. In either case, they all have an influential vision that challenges assumptions about local designers, and after taking a peek, you may want to buy their goods and wear them in style.

DFP asked, "What are your inspirations for the spring line?"

Blue Dress $300, Eugenia Paul
Green Pant $54, Wound
Curve Button Down $80, Wound
Vneck Tee with Gold Tiger $20, Wound

Cream Stretch Silk Charmeuse Gown with Venice Lace Trim $200.00, EthelMae

Eugenia Paul - Women's Apparel

"Our inspiration for this spring really just revolves around color and the need to be uplifted."

Beulah Cooley- Women's and Men's Apparel
"[My spring fashion inspirations come from] quiet moments, sketch pad and colors."

Pat Ewell - Semi Precious Jewelry
"I usually get my inspiration from color. I have always been a big fan of color especially the vibrant colors of red and purple. For Spring 2008 I will plan to tone my pieces down and pick up soft muted shades such as yellows, sea foam, melon, pink, and my favorite of all time lavender and lilac."

Elizabeth Kincaid-White - One of a kind handbags
"My inspiration not only for Spring 2008, but all collections, comes from endless hours of Turner Classic Movies viewing. My father was born in the 1920s, when "gentlemen" stood and removed their hats to greet a woman, and didn't use forward speech in her presence; and when "ladies" wore gloves and used parasols and were discreet. That has had such a profound impact on me. There is an internal reaction to certain colors and textures that lets me know 'this is what I am to be working with'. There's an expression "don't work hard, work smart." This translates to me that when inspired or in spirit, as I like to call it, follow the lead of that peeked interest. To go against it would be defeating, not only for the design, but the designer as well. When the designer compromises by ignoring or quieting that instinct, it will lead to an eventual silencing of the creative voice."

Sarah Lapinski/Wound - Menswear and Women's T-shirts
"It's always changing...After a year of getting some essential details locked in, I will attempt a return to basics and this can be expressed in the graphics, materials, styles and construction techniques employed. WOUND has always taken a daring and endearing approach to menswear, a nod to European cuts and artistic temperaments. These elements will definitely endure. It will be me taking full responsibility of WOUND, creatively, managerially. I am so ready to get back into things."
