Style Profile: Celebration of Creativity
This past Saturday the Farmington Area Arts Commission held "Celebration of Creativity" at Oakland Community College; a fundraising event for Cultural Arts Programs for both Farmington and Farmington Hills. International designer Peter Soronen originally from Farmington Hills donated seven dresses for the event to honor his mother a former Mayor of Farmington Hills and supporter of arts and culture who passed away in 2005. On a beautiful spring day Peter's designs and presence drew a crowd of lunching ladies, art lovers, and aspiring designers. In a room full of so many creative and stylish people I had to learn more about their own personal styles.
Peter Soronen, Farmington Hills/New York City
Eye Catching Style: plaid suit from Ari in New York City, describes his style as eclectic and classy. Peter is inspired by Classic Dior and Karl Lagerfeld. Peter has designed looks for Sarah Jessica Parker, Hillary Swank, and most recently Tina Fey. Fashion Motto: "Do what you love and stick with it."
Aspiring fashion designer and Junior at North Farmington High School Bobby Jakai, is working on applying to Parsons and FIT.
Eye catching style: a $55 Vintage 60's skinny tie from a vintage boutique in New York. Bobby describes his personal style as "very tailored business casual with an edge." Inspired by: Dolce and Gabana and Tom Ford Fashion Motto: "It's all about the shoes. It all comes from the ground up."
Erica Huyck, model with Elite Model Management from Farmington Hills but travels to New York most of the time.
Eye catching style: Strapless corseted dropped waist chiffon flared hem gown by Peter Soronen. Retail value of $5290. When Erica is not modeling she described her personal style as casual and classy. She loves Kate Spade and matching her bags with her shoes. Fashion advice: "Be personable and enthusiastic about fashion."
Samantha Steckloff, reigning Miss Oakland County from Farmington Hills.
Eye catching style: Silver and white chandelier earrings. $40 from Von Maur. Samantha describes her style as "Pageant girl with an athletic flair." She loves to wear designer jeans with a sweatshirt and cute shoes. Fashion advice: "Be comfortable and make it your own. It's all in how you put it together."
Holly Haynes, a senior from Southfield is an aspiring fashion designer and sells her some of her creations online.
Eye Catching Style: A $10 black vintage dress from a now closed thrift store. Holly says her style is classy with a rocker edge. She shops a lot at thrift stores and has a strategy for shopping when she goes into a huge resale store. "First go to the color section that you are looking for then weed out all of the ugly patterns. Then narrow your search down by finding dresses in the length you want." Fashion Motto: "Cover yourself!" ~ From her line Runaway Fashion House.
