Inside Look: Sal Vitale

They are the behind the scenes artists responsible for creating some of the unforgettable hair styles seen around the city. Next week they’re coming together to learn something new - for you. Americoif is a nonprofit organization made up of talented professional hairdressers from around the metro-Detroit area. This year’s event will feature the Vidal Sassoon Artistic Design Team. DFP sat down with the person behind bringing such extraordinary talent to the city, stylist and president of Americoif, Sal Vitale, to learn about Americoif.
“I joined it because it was a group of hair dressers eager to learn,” is how Vitale describes his purpose for entering the organization. Each year the group features guest artists from throughout the country and from around the world come to enhance the skills of local stylists. “We’ve had people from Europe that have been guest artists. They teach on everything. Could be color, cutting, hair styling.”

The group of 180 members is made up of salon owners, and stylists. Members come as far as Lansing to attend the events.
Once a year the organization opens its doors to non-members who want to find out what Americoif is about. Besides Vidal Sassoon, this year’s event will highlight six members of the group through a presentation for the press show. The clothes will be complements of the DFP boutique, and the hair will be done by members. The show is expected to be a theatrical and educational presentation.
Vitale, who is currently in charge of booking talent for the event, consistently tries to bring the best talent in the country. “The way this industry is, it changes day to day that’s the way fashion is. To keep up and keep current that’s what we do as a group….It helps us in pursuing our businesses.”  Hair dressers are consistently trained on different techniques from people from all over the world.

Vitale is no stranger to booking only the top talent.  His salon, Coloseum International Salon & Day Spa employs well-trained stylists who are also apart of Americoff and Intercoiffure, which is a national organization for the world’s best salons. The full service salon, located in Grosse Pointe, has had national recognition from magazines such as American Hairdresser, Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide, and is a regular participant of National Spa Week.
