Project Runway

Wednesday some of Detroit’s most fashion-conscious people gathered at Centaur’s Bar to kick off the new season of Project Runway in style. Local designers, photographers, models and fashionistas flocked to show support for one of this season’s designers- Detroit’s own Joe Faris.
Guests arrived at 7:30 to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and martinis before the show began at 9 o’clock. The anticipation in the air was palpable, and the season’s first episode proved to be something worthy of excitement.
The sixteen new designers were put to the test when they were told by Tim Gunn that their challenge was to “make it work” using products from a supermarket with only thirty minutes to shop.
In the end, there were sixteen garments constructed from tablecloths, flyswatters, garbage bags, plastic cups and mops. Detroit’s Joe Faris showed ingenuity with his pot holder top and skirt made of noodles.
Eternally posh judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia and guest judge Austin Scarlett were faced with a difficult decision, but ultimately they named Kelli Martin the winner with her dress of dyed vacuum bags and burned coffee filters. Jerry Tam was the first contestant to be eliminated after Michael Kors declared that his dress and raincoat made from a shower curtain looked like “a Handi Wipe gone wrong.”
All in all, viewing Project Runway with fashionable company in the chic atmosphere of Centaur’s is an excellent weekly event not to be missed!
