Project Runway Week 5
Posted: 8/14/2008

On the fifth episode of Project Runway, the designers were surprised by guest judge Brooke Shields, who challenged the designers to create an elegant day-to-night look for her character on the TV show “Lipstick Jungle.” I’m sure it was exciting to meet Brooke, but then she announced that the winner’s garment would actually be featured on Season 2 of her show. Things got started when everyone was given thirty minutes to sketch a design and then pitch it to Brooke, who would choose her favorite six designs, and then the designers would work in groups of two.

The six designers she chose were Jerell, Blayne, Kelli, Korto, Keith and Terri. Some of the pairings were quite interesting. Jerell got stuck with Stella, Blayne chose Leanne, Kelli chose Daniel, Korto chose Joe, Keith chose Kenley (possibly just to make her do her work and shut her mouth), and Terri chose Suede. The pairs went to Mood, had some arguments over fabric choices and hurried back to the design lab to get started.

Terri designed a flowing gypsy-style top with slim black pants. She gave Suede the task of completing the top, but she was stressing when it wasn’t finished to her standards. Keith and Kenley started off with some bickering over Keith’s design, with its floral chiffon top and high-waisted chocolate pencil skirt. Korto designed a form-fitting strapless dress in taupe, covered by a voluminous jacket in a shade of pumpkin. There was a slight dispute over the proportions, but she and Joe quickly worked it out.

Kelli and Daniel had problems throughout the whole process of creating Kelli’s black short-sleeve jacket, pencil skirt and bustier that had touches of bright blue and leopard print. Blayne envisioned an outfit of bermuda shorts with a collared shirt and tank top, and Leanne went along with his vision. Jerell and Stella surprisingly worked well together, perhaps thanks to Jerell’s use of leather in his garment. It consisted of a dark taupe satin v-neck top, a wide mustard-yellow “leathuh” waistband, and an A-line charcoal print skirt.

After the runway, the judges decided that Korto, Joe, Terri and Suede were all safe and that Keith, Kenley, Jerell and Stella were in the top four, which left Kelli, Daniel, Blayne and Leanne in the bottom. Keith was named the winner and Kelli was sent home. I really liked Keith’s design and was glad that he won, but was disappointed to see Kelli go. While I agreed with Michael Kors that her outfit was “Slutty, slutty, slutty,” she has shown more potential overall than Daniel, and Blayne’s design was just plain crazy. Be sure to watch next week, it seems no one is safe and the judges are keeping us on our toes!
