Inside Look: Sarah Lapinski

Sarah Lapinski, owner of menswear line WOUND, is winding down from her runway extravaganza at the Detroit By Design event last week. Her extensive framework speaks for itself, which includes work with the MOCAD, Pure Detroit Lab, Chrysler and her clothing line is even featured on Detroit Fashion Pages boutique. Asia of the Style Team had the chance to chat and to get an inside look on this Detroit hipster.

When did you first fall in love with fashion?
I really didn't "get" fashion growing up. We weren't permitted much media access and we definitely didn't get much of a budget for clothes. It was more about being resourceful to fit in or nurturing your own taste about things. We grew up shopping at the Salvation Army and I relished that you could be unique and have one-of-a-kind pieces. I love the escape and fantasy of dressing up. The ability to transform the mundane. It's not labels or trends that drive me, but a mood or exploration. Anyone... can be a star.

What differentiates you from other designers?
My pioneering spirit, cut and functionality. I tend towards a slimmer, more flattering fit and dynamic colors and textures. I always consider the weather and love to include as many layering pieces as possible. It also works with the WOUND design aesthetic, the build-up, progression (constructive or destructive) or embellishment of pieces and achieving great visual effect.

If you could dress anyone in the world, both past and present, who would it be and why?
David Bowie, nice and slim, provocative and daring. My ideal clients are in creative industries or maximizing because they ca-yan [can].

What are your top 5 songs in heavy rotation now? Let's do best dressed local Bands and/or chanteuses.
Aran Ruth, Blanche, Wolfman Band, Pas/Cal and Odd Clouds. That was hard, music and fashion are very strongly correlated and the artists in Detroit are world class at both.

What's your favorite local hangout spot and why?
UFO Factory. Looks good, hot staff, secret shows, super food.

If you were a fruit, which one would you be and why?
Pineapple. Sweet, unique, likes to travel, attention getting, and a good dancer. Plus, if you don't handle me right you might get hurt! It's also a natural anti-inflammatory, so says my dentist.

What one fashion item can't you live without?
A scarf, I suppose. That's all I need on a desert island.

What 3 words best describes your most current collection available on dfpboutique.com?
Bold, Inventive, New Classics.

Five years from now, what can Detroit expect to hear about you?
My menswear line is paying the bills! Dressing bands, collaborating with Chalayan, Carhartt, Opening Ceremony, Manufacturing in the D and working in some tailored looks for the ladies. Doing art, adventure travelling, becoming a yoga master, making babies, putting out a record, baking cookies...
