Interview: DJ Powdrblu
Posted: 2/19/2008

For the better half of two decades, DJ Powdrblu has been spinning records at all of your favorite clubs and parties. That's DJ Powdrblu, hold the e's. DFP was able to catch up with him in between record spins, to chat about his influence on the scene.

DFP: So how long have you been a DJ?

Powdrblu: I've been a DJ since 1986, basically, over the span of the last twenty years or so. As I got older, my taste varied more. I had some luck in playing some different venues that got me some notoriety. As far as getting some kind of recognition in the Electronic realm, the breaking point for me was back in the Winter/Spring of 2002 at The Temple in Ferndale on Tuesday nights.

After The Temple went out of business, someone suggested that I moved my Tuesday nights to La Dolce Vita and that was the following summer. From then, my Tuesday nights skyrocketed and now we've been doing it for over the last five summers.

DFP: A simple Google search of your name yields numerous articles with the Metro Times about what you've been doing at the La Dolce Vita. How is it to know, that what you're doing is getting so much recognition?

Powdrblu: For me, one of the great things has been that a lot of people whose records I've been buying are now people that are friends of mine. That's been pretty cool. I have a lot of working relationships with a lot of people that I'm a fan of. It's just been a joy.

DFP: For as long as you've been DJ, what's been the craziest thing you've seen?

Powdrblu: It's funny because I just actually met the person this happened with, but one of the coolest things was at La Dolce Vita. During the summer time, we play outside in the courtyard. A lot of the times, in the summer, you'll have rainy nights and nights where the rain will just roll in and roll out and we still play outside on those nights. On this particular night, the vibe was [so good] that I just kept playing through the rain and there were a handful of girls that stuck it out. They kept drawing people out as they kept dancing. It was a euphoric feeling that was going on out there, that I don't think will ever be matched. And (just recently) I met someone at a spot in Royal Oak and she just happened to be one of the girls there [on] that night.

DFP: Is it hard to go out there and put on a "themed" type of show?

Powdrblu: The music really dictates, and also the crowd does too if they're feeding off [of] it. I may go in thinking that I'm going to play one way, and then by the end of the night I've gone a completely different way that I didn't think that I would go. As far as it being difficult, I just kind of go through and play records that I think are gonna [hit].

A heavy burden is lifted with a phone message or letter.
