Interview: Darius McCrary

You may remember him as the best friend of Steve Urkel but, these days; Darius McCrary is more than just your favorite nerd's next door neighbor. DFP was able to catch up with McCrary on the road, and chat about everything from the rumors surrounding his name to his views on the music industry.

DFP: So what have you been up to lately?

DM: Makin' babies [laughs]. No, I'm joking. I've been doing a lot of work since Transformers. That was an incredible experience. I just finished shooting a pilot for a television series with the Wayans Brothers, for VH1, called Felony Brown. And I had the pleasure of playing Marcus "Felony" Brown.

I just finished two films. One for Paramount called Next Day Air, directed by Benny Boom [and] starring: Mike Epps, Mos Def, Debbie Allen, Donald Faison, Wood Harris, [and] myself. And then [I] finished one called A Good Man's Hard To Find for Twentieth Century Fox Films starring Darrin DeWitt Henson, Golden Brooks, and Hill Harper. [Hill Harper] is a great guy, man. He's a mentor, author, and a pretty accomplished renaissance man. Deborah Cox actually plays my wife in the film, and it's really great because I had the chance to play this tortured musician who is a guitarist and singer. He's a wife beater, and an alcoholic. I've never beat a woman so I've kind of had to stretch.

DFP: Watched a whole lot of What's Love Got To Do With It? [laughs]

DM: [laughs] Well yeah, I watched a whole lot of Ike [laughs], the alcohol I was familiar with [though]. That was real ironic, because Deborah is just a wonderful vocalist, a great person and just a beautiful soul. And whenever I used to listen to How Did You Get Here, I don't know why [but] I used to have the visions of beating her.

[The room erupts in laughter]

So now I understand why I used to visualize myself beating her, because I was going to do this movie later [laughs].

DFP: So it sounds like you've been a pretty busy man between all of these movies and dreaming about beating Deborah Cox!

DM: [laughs] And now, at the forefront of my life along with fatherhood, is this play [J.D. Lawrence Presents Rumors]. So I'm really enjoying myself, JD Lawrence is one of the most brilliant minds of entertainment today. Working with people like Puff Johnson [looks over at Puff Johnson], is incredible. She's an international recording artist, doing songs with 2Pac.

And working with Letoya Luckett, who I fall in love with every night - and how could you not [laughs]… JD's my main man and Telma Hopkins is a legend. She goes back to the original Motown. She's real, dude.

I've [also] been recording a lot of music. I got a recording studio with my man G1 who produced, "Let's Get Down, Let's Get Down," and for Tony! Toni! Tone!, DJ Quik, R. Kelly, and Dwele who's a Detroit native. That's my dog; shot out to Dwele and Trick Trick them my peoples.

DFP: Speaking of your music, not a lot of people would have known that you were such a great singer if they haven't followed your career. Do you have an album coming out?

DM: I have a studio, [and] I'm recording in there a whole lot. I'm always writing songs - that's all I'm doing. In the words of the great Sly Stone, "I don't write songs, I just record what happens in my life" [laughs]. Those are [words] everyone can relate to. Today we sensationalized music, and taken it so far from what it was actually created to be. Music is a universal language, it was created to communicate. I think music is one of the only things, along with theater, that can move beyond this third dimension. Don't let me get too deep on you [laughs]. But, seriously, music taps into emotions. And today, we sensationalize it and put a price tag on it. We pimped it out, whored it out, and done everything to it that we can possibly do to it, to disrespect music as an entity. And as an artist, I just want to do my best to keep it as pure as possible so I'm not really too apt to just run out and put an album out.

DFP: So, as the title of the play you're starring in, I'm sure you're aware of the rumors about yourself and Karrine "Superhead" Steffans. Is there anything you'd like to say about that?

DM: Well, the latest rumor is that Letoya Luckett is pregnant with my child and I'm really, really excited about this rumor [laughs]. I'm trying to get her to have a serious wedding. I don't want to put it out there too tough because her mother and grandmother are here [laughs]. We're gonna name [the baby] after my brother, Donovan. She's just an incredible individual, and hopefully we can get married in June and just have a real wedding. I've been married two times before, but I eloped. [This time] I wanna do it right, with 'Toya especially since our child is on the way. But, I will always love Karrine. That's my dog. But, Letoya has the baby [laughs].

DFP: [laughs] Okay, do you have any words of encouragement to those who would like to reach the level that you're at?

DM: Why [laughs]?

If you keep God first, and remember it's about being spiritual [and] not religious… remember, the gifts that are given to you comes through you , not from you. And are there to be used of you, from what operates above you. The hardest things in life are not to use your talents, but to stay away from distractions that will deter you from the fullness of your talents. Stay focused.
