Interview: Finger Eleven
Finger Eleven’s guitarist James Black was able to take some time out of Finger Eleven’s busy touring schedule to talk to the Detroit Fashion Pages. DFP: The groups fourth album, Them vs. You vs. Me took the least time to record of the bands 4 albums, do you think this low recording time will continue or was it just because of the material for the album? James Black: This time we were well prepared and had already recorded some of the stuff that we were going to use on the record beforehand so when we got there it was just sort of a matter of performing the songs. I think if we are able to do that same kind of prep work we will always be quick in the studio. DFP: Finger Eleven has been very involved with the gaming industry, was that a personal choice of the group or just part of the demands of being an artist today? James Black: I think it’s a little bit of both. There have been a couple of opportunities that have come along that we have said no to. There is definitely an overall endorsement and yeah we play a lot of videogames on the tour bus so we are definitely down with that. It’s just a different landscape and it is more fun to sit and play a videogame than it is to listen to the radio for some kids, it’s just a good way to get music out there. DFP: Has the group already begun work on the fifth album? James Black: Very slowly, I mean, I think if our track record shows anything it’s that we don't make records really quick[ly]. It seems like to sort of be our groove to tour for two years then break for two years then go back, I think everyone would like to shorten the length of the cycles and do a lot more touring and recording. Its hard to say but there has been a few ideas bouncing around. DFP: You are headed to Detroit pretty soon and when a fan comes to see you play live should they expect to hear a mix of older and newer material or do you focus more on the latest albums material? James Black: It’s sort of a good mix, I think in the next couple days actually we are getting together to rehearse a handful of older songs that we haven’t played in awhile I think its just natural that the newer stuff is what you want to play because that is what you are the most excited about so we have been definitely concentrating on the newer stuff. DFP: The DVD titled "Us Vs. Then Vs. Now" was just released a bit over a month ago, what is featured on that DVD? James Black: There’s live footage, we kind of went back and gathered up live footage and interview footage from the beginning of our career until now. I think a lot of people think that we are just a new band for people who are hearing “Paralyzer” and thinking ‘oh, who’s this new rock band’ so it kind of gives us the opportunity to showcase the career that we have had. It also has two concerts that were filmed at the beginning of last year and along with that whole thing comes a CD that has songs that for some reason or another didn’t make it on the record or were demos. So, overall I think the CD part is what is exciting. Finger Eleven are making stops at the Machine Shop in Flint on April 12th and at Streeters in Traverse City on April 13th. Both of the stops feature special guest Chevelle! Stop by either show to hear fan favorites and see a vibrant stage show. I’ll be seeing you around Detroit! -Ashley Star
