Interview: Puff Johnson
DFP: How hard was it for you being from Detroit, to get yourself in the industry? PJ: Actually, I was born in Detroit [but] I left here when I was four. My mom went to school here and she graduated from [Martin Luther King Jr. High School]. She used to sing, and so she left Detroit because she was like, "I want something different for my kid," so we moved to California. I loved it, but I came home every summer and every Christmas so I was here a lot. DFP: So was your mother that driving influence behind you getting into entertainment? PJ: Yeah, my mother and my grandfather. [My grandfather] used to sing with the Moss Family, and the Clarks'. DFP: So I hear you've worked with 2Pac, how was that experience? PJ: It was the greatest experience ever. I actually got a call from the producers that I did the track for, "Me Against The World" at the last minute. I drove over there and waited a little while, and [then] Pac walked in and I was like [in awe]. He wrote the hook and everything. He was cool, real down to earth. He wasn't thuggish at all, that day. DFP: The whole Death Row image, none of that was present? PJ: I didn't say Death Row [laughs]. No, it was cool though. DFP: What happened with your deal at Sony? PJ: Actually, they ended up firing everyone there and made a lot a changes, and my contract was up. I decided not to renew and ended up overseas and I've been over there ever since. DFP: When did you start getting into acting? PJ: Singing, and performing is pretty much acting. [But] it just kind of happened, but I'm still learning and I'm fortunate to have a bunch of great people around me. It's a lot of fun. DFP: Which would you prefer, singing or acting? Would you rather have that hit movie, or that hit album? PJ: Hit album. I love singing! DFP: Outside of acting these days, what are you normally doing? PJ: In the studio, writing. I recorded some songs with Leela James, and I'm about to move to Atlanta. But, mainly a lot of writing, I do a lot of writing. I'm completing my record, which should be out this summer [on Universal Records]. The single comes out in May. You can catch Puff Johnson on tour with J.D.
