“Bogdon Box: Music Box, No… Really”
Posted: 3/6/2008

Detroiters have never been known for their lack of creativity, in fact, that is why we have stuck it out musically for so long. We are the innovators because we were able to see music and instrumentation in the simplest of day to day items.

Chris Badynee is a Metro Detroiter who was told that he had no musical talent and no chance of ever getting an instrument, so when all else failed, he made one. Chris explains that his creation the "Bogdon Box Bass" is "the most fun he has ever had" and he is so happy about the attention his invention has received. Chris, with the help of his Uncle Dave, Cousin Mark and Cousin Alan created a fully-functional large bass guitar using a cardboard box and string.

The idea came from a project that was assigned to his son when he was in Second Grade, he explained that "his son was supposed to make a musical instrument out of completely recycled materials" and he helped him with the project. They decided to make him a single string cello out of a cardboard box, and Chris thought that the project could be bigger. Chris realized musical instruments, even used ones, can be very expensive. Just when he had finally saved up enough money to purchase an upright bass, his bathroom caught fire and he had to replace everything.

Rather than lose hope and give up on his dream, Chris looked back to his son's project and he began to seriously work on what became the two-string Bogdon Box Bass. The instrument was named after his father's middle name, Bogdon, because his father was a captain on the Detroit Fire Department and he thought it only fitting because a fire was the catalyst to his creation. He was so excited that Chris described how he filmed himself "playing a little ditty and posted the video on the web" and it wasn't long until the emails began pouring in.

On his website, http://www.edencompanies.com/bogdon/index.html, he offers a “box bass kit” and several other items.
