</title><description>AMSTERDAM (AFP) -While the hope of any major designer nowadays is to come up with the season&apos;s &quot;it&quot; bag, in Amsterdam the Museum of Bags and Purses is filled with the &quot;it&quot; bags of centuries past.

With 3,500 bags, purses and accessories, the museum has the largest collection of its kind in the world and is a true Walhalla for leading designers as well as addicts of big bag names such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

But there is more to the collection than just marking passing fads, says museum director Sigrid Ivo, whose mother Hendrikje founded the museum.

&quot;The history of the bag is not just a question of keeping track of a fashion accessory, it also shows what people needed to carry, how society changed, and how the role of women changed,&quot; she said.

From the Middle Ages to the late 17th century, men and women used small bags and purses worn in their belts to carry coins and papers. And the oldest bag in the museum is a man&apos;s 16th century goat-leather bag equipped with 18 different pockets hidden behind secret clasps.

When fashion changed in the 18th century from billowing skirts ideal for hiding pouches tied underneath around the waist, to more clingy empire-line dresses, women took to carrying purses instead in their hands.

The handbag was born.

&quot;This is the first handbag my mother ever bought,&quot; said Ivo, pointing to a small German 1820s number in tortoise-shell inlaid with mother of pearl. That first bag triggered a 30-year-long passion that turned first into a private collection before Hendrikje Ivo 10 years ago converted part of her house on the outskirts of Amsterdam into a museum.

Since the 1960s explosion of jeans and hippie culture, which made gloves look hopelessly outdated, they have languished on the sidelines of fashion, but that is now definitely set to change.

Forget practicality, gloves are making a comeback as an affordable fashion accessory -- far, far cheaper than the &quot;brag&quot; bags sported by the wives and girlfriends of footballers.

Designer Manuel Rubio says what today&apos;s new young clientele want is originality: gloves have become &quot;a fashion object, an object of desire.&quot;

&quot;The days of traditional utilitarian gloves in black and brown to keep out the cold are long gone.&quot;

In this mountainous hot spring resort just a day trip from Tokyo, a spa park is offering a bathtub, shaped like a beer mug, filled with heated amber water and white foam with the aroma of hops and barley.

The Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is also pouring and spraying real beer into the bath and onto the customers three times a day until December 31.

The beer bath installation, which began late last month, pays homage to the &quot;beer fights&quot; of professional baseball season winners, much like the champaigne fights of their US Major League counterparts.

&quot;We wanted ordinary people to enjoy the fun,&quot; the spa said in a statement.

The facility says the beer bath moisturises and cleanses the skin.

The theme park-style facility, which features various tubs of hot spring water, annually celebrates the release of the Beaujolais Nouveau with a real sommelier pouring the fresh wine into its open-air &quot;wine spa.&quot;

The Yunessun also offers baths of coffee, tea and Japanese sake.

Frida Giannini, now in charge of the label, delved into the fashion archives for her circle skirts, cinched into the waist with a neat bow and billowing out to mid-calf, draped or pleated in graphic black and white with splashes of yellow and candy pink or exotic floral prints. Others were seamed with bands of patent leather.

Pink, candyfloss or rose-petal, was the fetish shade in Giannini&apos;s collection, whether for a dinky jacket-cum-shirt in shiny vinyl or a roomy coat with short sleeves, jodphurs or a puffball dress with big pockets.

Taffeta evening gowns, which swept the floor, came with huge black belts. A corset top was held up on one shoulder by a giant belt buckle.

Roberto Cavalli went even further back in history with his recreation of courtesans from the court of the Sun King in the hall of mirrors in Versailles, with bouffant hairdos, long dresses in white cotton with lashings of lace, smocking and pintucks.

Armani&apos;s girls wafted languidly down the catwalk in full-length voile dresses, some loosely knotted at the ankle, their hair flowing loose or just kept in check with a net scarf spangled with gemstones.

Outsize silk shirts came in pearl grey, gunmetal and blue, topped with little waistcoats or boleros.

Billowy, satin shorts were a key item, pleated elegantly at the knee and tied to one side.

Flat shoes were a must, either Greek sandals or jewelled flip flops.

For evening, necklines plunged to the navel while delicate fringed scarves were tossed nonchalantly over the shoulders of corset-topped dresses, floating gently behind the models as they sauntered lazily down the runway.

Music teachers and instrument shop owners say that young Iraqis, bored with television and with little else to do, are investing both time and money in learning to play musical instruments.

With little or no electricity supplies in Baghdad, however, they are limited mainly to string instruments -- especially guitars.

&quot;The top musicians in Iraq who used to be our customers have left the country to escape the bad security situation,&quot; said Raghid, owner of an instrument shop in Baghdad&apos;s downtown Karrada district.

&quot;So now we are selling to amateurs who wish to learn to play music at home for entertainment,&quot; said the talented 32-year-old who asked that only one name be used.

&quot;Youngsters are mainly buying imported guitars which need no electricity,&quot; he added, sighing for the days when the Middle Eastern Oud, or lute, known for its intricate engravings, was his top seller.

Prices vary. A Korean guitar sells for 60 to 90 dollars (42 to 64 euros) while a Chinese violin goes for as little as 50 dollars. For those with their own sources of electrical power, Indonesian or Chinese keyboards are available for prices ranging from 100 to 700 dollars.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony at Maponya Mall on Thursday will finally enable residents to shop at highstreet stores such as Toys &apos;R&apos; Us and Woolworths that had previously been confined to the malls of nearby Johannesburg.

The mall is the brainchild of

Richard Maponya, who made his first fortune by running a clothing business at a time when Soweto was little more than a place to sleep for the low-paid black workers who provided the labour force for the whites-only apartheid regime&apos;s economy in the commercial capital Johannesburg.

&quot;It has been a long journey. I never stopped that dream because I knew that one day, one day, the people of Soweto will own what is theirs,&quot; the 82-year-old Maponya told AFP in an interview.

&quot;I was convinced the people really needed a mall ... I never stopped.&quot;

Around 200 stores will be crammed into the 65,000-square-metre mall that has been erected at a cost of around 650 million rand (92 million dollars, 65 million euros).

The investment represents a huge vote of confidence in an area that, while still suffering from high rates of crime, is also experiencing a property boom thanks to the emergence of a black middle class.

Soweto is also seen as the heartbeat of a black South Africa which was confined to the margins during the apartheid era which finally ended in 1994.

&quot;Soweto has set trends in music, clothes, theatre with many artists staying here,&quot; said Phillip Nkomo, owner of the Reliable Music Warehouse, which is one of the stores based in the mall.

According to Nkomo, the residents of Soweto now have considerable spending power but that money has to date been spent in the stores of downtown Johannesburg which is a 30-minute journey from the township.

&quot;They have to travel long distances to buy their own products at the malls. Even tourists who come here see and hear some of the artists perform have to go to town to buy their product,&quot; he said.

Long-time Soweto resident Tommy-Leigh Isaak said he was delighted that he would be able to buy brand names on his doorstep rather than facing the choice between substandard goods or a trip into town.

&quot;Finally this will save us from long travelling to town and the suburbs to do the shopping,&quot; he said.

&quot;Now I can just walk and get everything I want under one roof. And when I am tired, I can enjoy a movie before going back home. It will save lots of our travelling money.&quot;

The complex includes an eight-screen cinema, takeaway restaurants such as McDonalds and even a self-styled &quot;coordinated lifestyle store.&quot;

It&apos;s all a long way from the 1960s and 70s when Soweto was the hotbed of opposition to the apartheid regime, gaining international recognition as the scene of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

Its history however will be commemorated in the mall with a statue greeting visitors of Hector Pietersen, a 12-year-old boy who was shot dead by the apartheid security forces during the 1976 student riots.

Maponya, dubbed the &quot;father of black retail,&quot; said he kept his faith of a brighter future even at the height of apartheid.

&quot;Soweto is my home, the people have supported me all their lives ... I&apos;ve always wanted to give back and my goal is to create job opportunities at a bigger scale than what I was doing before,&quot; he added.

She opened and closed the show for &quot;Miss Bikini Luxe&quot;, one of the first collections unveiled in a low-key start to fashion week, with the heavy hitters not due to start showing until Monday.

Elena Miro, who specialises in clothes for the fuller figure, was first on the official calendar, presenting her fifth collection.

Around 90 catwalk presentations are scheduled over the next week, kicking off with Armani, Trussardi Just Cavalli, Gianfranco Ferre and the British label Burberry on Monday.

Munich Mayor Christian Ude ordered the tapping of the first beer barrel, the ritual kick-off for the 174th edition of the party.

The festivities are held at Theresienwiese, a 31-hectare (12.4 acre) park with 14 large tents where drinkers, many wearing traditional Bavarian costumes, take their spots at long wooden tables.

In line with tradition, the first mass, or litre, was served to the minister-president of Bavaria, Edmund Stoiber, who is set to leave office at the end of the month after 14 years in his post.

Last year more than six million litres (13 million pints) of beer were drunk.

The event also generated nearly a billion euros (1.4 billion dollars) for the Bavarian capital, with 450 million coming directly from the festival and 300 million earned through hotels, which are always packed for the occasion.

</title><description>PARIS (AFP) -Hedi Slimane, the designer who revolutionised menswear at Christian Dior, left the house because he wanted a chance to design for women, he told Le Monde&apos;s Sunday edition.

&quot;After seven years at Dior I wanted to move on and I wanted to dress women, which wasn&apos;t possible at Dior,&quot; he explained in an interview with the French daily.

Britain&apos;s John Galliano this summer celebrated a decade in charge of women&apos;s ready-to-wear and couture at the prestigious fashion house.

Slimane inspired Chanel&apos;s top designer Karl Lagerfeld to shed 42 kilos (92 pounds) on a draconian diet so that he could squeeze into the slim silhouette, high-collared, narrow suits Slimane sent out on the catwalk. His take on fashion has also caught on with women.

Slimane said that before leaving Dior in January 2006 he had been in discussions over whether it would put up the finances for him to open a couture house in his own name, but the talks stalled. &quot;I was never ready to sell my name,&quot; he told Le Monde.

In the interview, he also hit out at the way in which the international fashion calendar is organised, whereby collections are unveiled a year in advance.

&quot;The seasonal collections don&apos;t relate to anything anymore because everything is on the Web in a second. Because it is impossible to adapt the logistics, the fashion business is running to keep up with fashion. Once upon a time all that made sense, but not any more.&quot;

The magazine, a monthly, will be priced at 100 rupees (2.5 dollars) and is the 17th international edition of Vogue.

&quot;There are more than a million Vogue women in India, each with high awareness of international luxury, fashion and beauty brands,&quot; said Alex Kuruvilla, the managing director of Conde Nast India.

&quot;India is in Vogue and now Vogue will be in India,&quot; he said in a statement.

The Indian publication will feature international and Indian fashion, decors, global cultures, travel and health.

Several fashion and lifestyle-linked foreign magazines like Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Seventeen, Maxim, Hello!, Time Out and OK! have already launched Indian editions.

Various estimates of India&apos;s young fashion sector put its size between 50 and 250 million dollars -- a small fraction of the country&apos;s 12-billion-dollar domestic textile industry.

A study released earlier this year by an industry body estimated that the fashion sector could grow tenfold in the next five years.

The 40-something Cuban-born fashion designer, who has lived here since he was 22, told AFP he enjoyed surprising his guests with the concept of each collection in the Czech capital, &quot;a city where there are so many incredible locations.&quot;

For previous shows, Laffita has taken his models to Prague&apos;s art-deco central railway station and the chandelier-adorned Baroque Clam-Gallas place.

This time, he has set up his catwalk &quot;under the attentive eyes of the patron saint of the Czech Republic,&quot; Saint Wenceslas, whose statue dominates the square lined by impressive art-deco buildings in the heart of Prague.

His latest collection was inspired by a recent trip in Asia, with ultra-short kimonos and romantic cheongsams in fine silks in pastel shades.

The square, a lively tourist hot-spot all round-the-clock, has been the focus of much of the turbulence during the last century, including the wave of mass demonstrations that led to the toppling of the communist regime in 1989.

&quot;During the Revolution, when everybody marched and demonstrated and were shaking their keys in the air, I was on holiday in the Tatra mountains,&quot; he admitted before the show.

The diminutive singer, currently staging an extended series of concerts at London&apos;s 02 arena, took fashionistas by surprise at British designer Matthew Williamson&apos;s 2008 Spring-Summer collection show.

The first indication of the unexpected show came when a Prince track struck up as models prepared to head down the runway -- nothing unusual at the fashion festival which ends Thursday.

But then suddenly the models began dancing, before the 49-year-old showman himself launched into a song from his latest album, initially staying in his seat before joining his dancers on the catwalk.

His eye-opening effort was greeted by thunderous applause from the chic elite at the show, held in a vast tent on Eaton Square in the city centre.

After the unexpectedly glamorous launch, Williamson -- bringing a show to London for the first time since 2002 -- took to the catwalk himself to present a collection rich in bright colours and silk, satin and cotton.

Prince, known for hits such as &quot;Purple Rain&quot;, &quot;1999&quot; and &quot;U Got The Look&quot;, began a series of shows at the former Millennium Dome on August 2, winning rave reviews from critics.

Tecktonik, a mix of hip hop and techno dance, was the talk of this year&apos;s Paris Techno Parade, the annual dance music street carnival that took place in the French capital last Saturday.

Groups of teenagers were overheard chanting &quot;Tecktonik&quot; as dance-offs took place in the street and the evening news bulletins were full of images and testimony from the leaders of this latest craze.

The starting point for the scene is a complex of nightclubs on the southeastern outskirts of Paris called the Metropolis, but there are signs that it is spreading thanks to videos on file-sharing websites YouTube and Dailymotion.

&quot;For seven years we&apos;ve been organising nights called Tecktonik Killer where we play the harder sounds of northern Europe (Belgium, The Netherlands) and the softer sounds of the south (Italy, Spain),&quot; the artistic director of the Metropolis, Cyril Blanc, told AFP.
